5 Myths About Meditation

I struggled with meditation for years until I debunked a few myths for myself.

When I first started meditating, I was convinced that I was failing miserably at it. I actually almost completely gave up on it all together because of how discouraged I felt.

But I decided to do a bit more research before throwing in the towel and what I discovered changed my meditation practice… and my life. 

Myth #1: Meditation is about clearing your mind of any thoughts.

This is virtually impossible… and exactly where I kept getting stuck. Meditation is actually about befriending your thoughts, not getting rid of them.

Myth #2: You have to keep completely still while you meditate.

Also false. I regularly shift and move while I meditate and in fact meditating helps me better tune into what my body needs to feel more at ease in the moment, which is such a gift!

Myth #3: You must feel calm and peaceful during your meditation practice.

This myth is the reason why most people abandon their meditation practice. In my experience, if you stick with meditation it can help you feel this way more often eventually. But each practice is different and setting this high bar for yourself is both completely unnecessary and usually backfires on you.

Myth #4: Meditation is a religious practice.

Although some religious traditions incorporate meditation practices within them, meditation itself does not have to be a religious practice. It can simply be a time to disconnect from the world so that you can reconnect with yourself. As a busy professional, this has truly been the best part of my meditation practice for me. 

Myth #5: Meditation is hard.

I used to think this… until I found the right type of meditation for me. I love learning and self-discovery. And so, when I found a meditation practice that gave me the space to reflect deeply on powerful coaching questions, I was beyond thrilled! My wandering mind started to wander back effortlessly to the questions… and even if it didn’t there was always something to learn about myself in the process.
